Abstract

Cancer is a primary non-communicable disease posing substantial social and economic challenges in both developing and developed countries. This review was aimed to share the current knowledge of the chemical composition of Acorus calamus and its roles in the prevention and treatment of cancer. As no human studies have been performed, only in silico, in vitro, and animal studies have been included in the review. An electronic search for literature was carried out using the following databases: PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, preprint platform, and Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews. Articles were gathered from the inception of the database until August 2021. Moreover, the traditional uses and phytochemistry of Acorus calamus were surveyed in the original resources and summarized. Overall, the result indicates that Acorus Calamus primarily inhibits cell viability by the mean of apoptosis. It also inhibits cell proliferation and induces cell cycle arrest, mainly at the G1 phase. This systematic review analysed the relevant literature on the activities of Acorus Calamus constituents on cancer cells. However, most of the studies included in this review are in vitro. Hence more studies on humans would play a more significant role in producing a more comprehensive range of data.
